Directions for Jan's Pillowcase Dress

Fabric yardages are given for a size 4 dress:
          3/4 yard main dress fabric
1/4 yard contrast fabric for hemline
          3  1/4 yards of 5/8" grosgrain ribbon

1.  Remove selvages

2.  Fold border fabric in half lengthwise with wrong sides
together and press.  Press under 1/4" on one long side.

3.  Place right side of dress body to right side of border with
raw edges even and stitch a 1/4" seam.  Press toward border.

4.  Fold border up to seam line on wrong side, pin in place and
stitch.  Press flat.  If necessary, trim dress body and border
so that they are even at the side seams.

5.  Turn dress to right side and place ribbon over seam line.  Pin,
then stitch in place on each side of the ribbon.

6.  Fold fabric in half (width-wise) and cut on the fold.  Now
you have a front and a back.

7.  Determine the length of your dress according to the child's
height, adding 1  1/2" for casing at the top.  Tear or cut away
any excess fabric.  This will be used to make bias pieces for
     the underarms.

8.  At the top edge, measure in 1  1/2" to 2" from the side and
mark.  Measure down 3" - 4" and mark.  Draw a "J" shape for
     the armholes and cut.

9.  With right sides together, sew side seams; press.

10. Make bias strips out of leftover fabric 1  1/4" by length
needed for armholes (12" - 14"), piecing if necessary.  With
right sides together, stitch the bias strip to the armhole edge.
Clip curves.  Turn under, then under again and stitch making
     armhole facing.

11. At top front and back turn under 1/4" and press.  Turn down
3/4" and stitch forming a casing for the ribbon.

12. Cut two one-yard pieces of 5/8" ribbon and thread through
casing to make ties.  Tie in a bow at shoulders.
